UPDATE ON THE USPCA AGILITY COURSE
To Our Membership,
I would like to start by saying Happy Year to you and your families! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We as an association had a good 2022 and I am looking forward to 2023.
As you are aware, the topic of our agility testing has been a big discussion point recently within our association. We, the Executive Board are here representing you the members. When something of importance needs to be addressed, it is our responsibility as officers to act in the best interest of our members.
We have had multiple meetings with the Executive Board and the Rules Committee regarding our agility testing, and in addition taking into account the results from the agility testing poll that was sent out, this is an area of concern that needs to be addressed. Also, our K9 Medical Director, Dr. Paul McNamara, advised the membership at the last national trial the concerns that agility brings for acute injuries to our canines, and more importantly the potential for long term chronic repetitive injury. With all the data that was provided to us from our members and our veterinarian, the Executive Board has voted to approve the temporary suspension of agility from our PD1 Trials. This emergency suspension follows our Bylaws which a 3/4 vote is needed from our Executive Board. The decision was made to address the potential injuries to our canines and also took into account the fact that the courts do not require or recognize the need for certification in agility. This temporary suspension will remain in effect until the National Board meeting in May, where a permanent solution will be decided regarding whether to keep or remove agility.
Effective immediately, this association will not be testing agility in any PD1 certifications until the May meeting when a vote will take place.
Melinda has a modified temporary scoring program which removes the 60 points for agility. The program is modified to change the 70% passing score as well, so it will work just like the program did prior to the removal. 448 points out of 640 points will be the temporary 70% needed to pass a PD1 Certification. Obedience and Apprehension are not affected and will remain at 70%. To qualify for the National’s, which is 80%, you will need 512 points.
If anyone needs any further guidance please reach out to myself or one of the other board members.
Thank you and as always be safe out there!!
